The first exhibit of the Fall Semester at the University of Rhode Island Library Gallery is In the Pomegranate Garden by Naomi Sultanik. “In the Pomegranate Garden” is an installation of works on paper and book/objects where several textual entities are synthesized into a visionary landscape.
Naomi Sultanik is a Pawtucket based artist making mixed media paintings, drawings and objects. She has lived in Israel and the Netherlands where she spends time working regularly. Her work was shown there throughout the 1980’s in one-person and group shows and, since then, in the United States. Most recently her work was shown as part of the collaborative exhibition “Pure” (curator, Lisa Lunskay Gordon, Brighton, MA) and at artSpace@16, Malden, MA. The artist studied at Cooper Union and SUNY Buffalo. She has taught mixed media drawing at Orange County Community College (NY) and facilitated interactive workshops addressing social issues (Project Street Corner Werk, NL).
Artist’s statement: “My art is grounded in drawing in the sense it defines a process reflecting the multiple implications of the word itself. This includes an investigation of the material at hand, whether it be paper and pencil or fabric; a word or object. Often, the play of one material against another—text against gesture—creates the space for an idea or image to grow. I draw upon landscapes that are part of my history, yet seem to renew themselves in the present. The view is always attractive, but the presence and implications of the unseen seductive. I like the Ashanti expression for the New Year—“When the edges of the world meet.”
The Library Gallery is located on the main floor of the University Library, 15 Lippitt Road, Kingston, RI 02881. Library hours are:
