The September exhibit in the University of Rhode Island Library Gallery is A Perlustration of People, Prayers, Places and Potpourris by Reiko Wimbush.
Artists Statement I was born and grew up in Japan where art is a vital part of life especially so in the ancient capital city of Kyoto. I studied English literature in college (AB degree from St. Agnes College, Kyoto), married an oceanographer, and came to the USA. Here I raised a family, worked as a science translator for McGraw Hills Biotechnology Newsletter, Nikkei Medical, etc., and wrote and published short stories as a hobby. Although I was keenly aware of the beauty of the natural world the flood of white dogwood flowers in dark woods, the glorious fingers of God slanting down between puffy grey clouds after rain the idea of capturing this beauty with a paintbrush never entered my mind until I began studying oil painting five years ago. Nevertheless, better late than never, as the saying goes. I thank God for eyes to see the worlds beauty natural and man-made a mind to absorb it, a heart to love it, and hands to express it on canvas. These paintings try to capture beauty from around the globe in people (some of them at prayer), scenery, and everyday objects. Bringing these images together here, I hope to show both the worlds wonderful variety and, despite the current turmoil, its underlying unity. Professional affiliations: South County Art Association, Wickford Art Association.
