To access a CSA Illumina Database, select it from the list of Reference Databases at http://www.uri.edu/library/reference_databases/title.html.

After selecting one of the listed CSA Illumina Databases, you will be presented with a search screen.

Enter your search terms in the blanks provided. The default search option is “anywhere” in the record. However, you may search for terms as keywords, or in the author, title, journal name (see example below). Keyword searches return results where your terms appear in the title, abstract, descriptor, or identifiers, and are the best way to search for articles on a topic.

Synonyms should be entered on the same line, while the concepts you wish to combine them with should be entered on the line below. Make sure that the pull-down menus to the left of the search blanks are set to Keywords, KW= unless you are searching for a specific author, title, or descriptor. Results appear once you click on Search.

Clicking on either the "Search Tips" link below the search windows or the "Help & Support" link in the upper right of the screen (not shown) will give you help and information about your search options and results when using CSA Illumina databases.

With the majority of CSA Illumina databases, you can limit your results to articles recently added to the databases (“Latest Update”), journal articles only, and English language results only. Limiting articles to “Journal Articles Only” is useful when you are searching specifically for journal articles, but this option eliminates any relevant book chapters and dissertations from your results. You may also limit your search by date.

Your results are automatically listed by most recent first. If you wish, you may re-sort them by relevance rank by changing the option in the drop-down “Sort by” menu on the right. The default record display –- "short format" –- provides the citation information and the beginning of the abstract. The other display options available to you are "full format," which is the complete record with the article's references and, "full format without Refs." The final option is to customize your results list, displaying only the information you deem necessary.

Entry results can be either viewed as all "publication types," or you may choose to narrow your list to one publication category such as Peer-Reviewed Journals. Each entry contains links to either the full record, more information about the author, full text, or to the library's holdings. To the right of the record, subject terms (descriptors) are provided as links.

Click on either the View Record link or the article title to see more information about a citation. You will be provided with the “full record,” which supplies you with the complete abstract (not shown) summarizing the article, plus additional information such as publication type, descriptors and identifiers, and classification codes. References will also be provided. Some fields — such as the author and descriptors — are links. If you click on an author’s name, for example, the database will search for other articles by that author. All fields listed in the citation are searchable. (Click on the "Help & Support" link in the upper right corner (not shown) for more details.)

You may also combine descriptors in the full record to create a more targeted search.

If the entry is a journal article, click on the Search for Full-Text link above the citation to find the entire article. The window that appears will provide a link to the full text (if available) and a link to the HELIN Library Catalog. If full text is not available, search the HELIN Catalog by Journal ISSN or Title to see if URI or another HELIN library owns this item. If the entry is for a book, book chapter, or dissertation, click on "Links to Holdings" to search the HELIN Catalog for the library's holdings.

To select records for saving, printing, and e-mailing, check the box in the top left-hand corner of each record. Clicking on the “Save/Print/Email Records” button link above your results will give you a variety of formats in which to save, print, or email your records.

Please note:  If you find a citation for which the source is Dissertation Abstracts International, your first step is to write down the author of the dissertation, and his or her Author Affiliation. Next, use Dissertation Abstracts (ProQuest Digital Dissertations) to search for the item. For instructions on searching Dissertation Abstracts, see the user guide at http://www.uri.edu/library/guides/databases/disabs/disabs.html. To obtain a journal article from another library, click on the Interlibrary Loan link at the top of the Full Record Display.
