Dissertations & Theses (ProQuest)

Dissertations & Theses (ProQuest) provides abstracts of Ph.D. dissertations from over 1,000 graduate schools and universities. Current records include some dissertations from non-American universities and some masters theses.

Dissertations & Theses can be searched by selecting it from the list of reference databases at http://www.uri.edu/library/reference_databases/title.html.

After entering the database, begin your search by entering terms in the search blanks. You can narrow your search by selecting fields from the pull-down menus, including Author, Subject, School, Adviser, and Degree. You may also limit your search by publication date. Click on Search to see your results.

For help using Dissertations & Theses, click the Search Tips link above the search blanks, or the Help button in the upper right corner of the screen.

Your results will appear in an abbreviated format, as shown below. You may view the full citation and abstract by clicking on the title of the dissertation. Theses and dissertations published since 1997 have a free 24 page PDF preview available.

At any point, you may select citations and abstracts for addition to your Folder for printing, emailing, or purchase by checking the Mark Document box. Pricing varies by format, but starts around $30.

The citation and abstract provide further information about the result you selected. Pay special attention to the Subject listings. You can use these to further refine your search by selecting one or more and searching from the abstract page, or by combining them in the Advanced Search.

Clicking on the Preview link lets you browse and print the first 24 pages of the thesis or dissertation.

URI owns theses and dissertations completed at URI, and you can download URI theses from 1997 to the present from Dissertations & Theses at no charge. To obtain earlier URI theses, search the HELIN catalog. You can order other theses and dissertations directly from UMI ProQuest, or you may request an item through Interlibrary Loan. For materials requested via Interlibrary Loan, allow sufficient time for delivery. See the Interlibrary Loan office page at http://www.uri.edu/library/interlibrary_loan/ill.html for more information.
