| FirstSearch
offers a common search program for a number of subject-specific bibliographic databases,
such as ERIC, GPO Monthly Catalog, and MEDLINE. FirstSearch also provides access to the
general databases ArticleFirst, PapersFirst, ProceedingsFirst, and WorldCat. Finally, one
passworded databases is available through FirstSearch: Alternative Press Index. |
| All FirstSearch Databases to which the URI
Library offers access can be searched by selecting from the list of reference databases
at http://www.uri.edu/library/reference_databases/title.html. The default search page for all the FirstSearch Databases available through the University Library is the Advanced Search. You do have the option to conduct a Basic Search but, for more control over your search, perform an Advanced Search. Three search windows are provided for the user and the default search is Keyword (please take note that the first two terms are being searched for as subjects). To search for an exact phrase, enclose your terms in quotation marks. You may also search for articles by subject (as is being done in the search below), a specific author, by title, or source. You may limit your results by year. To search for articles about an author, enter his or her name in the Keyword blank, not the author blank. Although the FirstSearch databases allow you to limit your search to articles in full text, it is not recommended, as these databases contain few or no full text articles.
|
| Advanced Search also allows
you to use the Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT to combine searches, and to limit
a search by year, document type, and language, using the options in the Limit to
area. You may choose to display records by relevance or date by selecting from the
pull-down box Rank by.

Obtaining the Article — As stated in the beginning, the FirstSearch databases provide indexing and abstracts and contain few or no full text articles. To learn if either a print and/or an online version of the journal is provided by the University Library, click on the Search for Full-Text link (to the right of External Resources). A pop-up window will provide links to online options (if available) and, also, to the HELIN Catalog. If electronic access is not available, search the Catalog to see if URI has a print copy of the publication. |
