The eleven academic libraries are: the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, the Community College of Rhode Island, Johnson & Wales University, Providence College, Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University, Bryant College, Wheaton College, and Brown University (Brown University's catalog can be searched via the In-Rhode Catalog. For additional information, please refer to http://www.uri.edu/library/inrhode.html.).

Most library materials are included in HELIN, with the exception of some older items and special collections. You may access HELIN from the University Libraries home page or directly at http://library.uri.edu/.

Displayed above is the start page  for the HELIN Catalog. It provides the user with the default search for the Catalog:  the Quick Search. With the Quick Search, the HELIN Catalog may be searched by Keyword, Author, Title, LC Subject, and MESH (Medical Subject Headings). When searching by Keyword, you may use Boolean operators (AND, OR, and NOT) to broaden, narrow, or define your search more clearly. You may also truncate your search term(s) by typing the root word with an asterisk at the end. For example, searching for econom* will find records containing the words economics, economist, economy, etc.

For more information on any of the search options or other features of the HELIN Catalog, click on the Help button at the top of the screen.

The right column of the Quick Search Page allows you to search the Catalog for Course Reserves (either by Course Name or Instructor), restrict a search to a specific Collection Type/Format (for example: newspapers/ magazines/ journals), and access information about your library account.

Performing an Advanced Search will give you more control over your search. More search options are provided with that search. For example, using the pull-down menu bars you can limit your search by: format (book or journal); language; material type (e.g. video, audio, music score); location; and year of publication.

After clicking on Submit, the Results List will come up. Each record on the list provides the location (or, locations) of the item in HELIN, as well as the item's call number and availability.

When you see an item of interest, click on the title to display the item’s record. The record contains complete bibliographic information (author, title, place of publication, publisher, etc.) for the item.

Besides viewing records, you may also print, download, and e-mail them. Instructions can be found in the General Guide, "HELIN Catalog — Marking records to print, e-mail, or download.

University of Rhode Island students, faculty, and staff with a valid HELIN borrowers card may use the REQUEST function (the link is located at the top of the page) to have books from other HELIN libraries sent to the HELIN library of their choice, or InRhode to request books from Brown (Special Borrowers do not have this privilege.).  From the screen showing the item to be requested, click on the REQUEST button in the HELIN toolbar. If the item is not in the HELIN catalog, you can click on the InRhode button and replicate the search in the Brown catalog.

Complete the request form by entering your name, library barcode, and pickup location. The book will arrive at the pickup location you selected and will be held for pickup for 10 days. You will be notified by e-mail or mail that the book has arrived.
