| Use the HELIN
Library Catalog to determine whether or not the URI Library has a print or electronic
subscription to a periodical. |
| While examining a scholarly article’s list of
references, you see a citation that catches your interest: Anderson, Christopher J.
“The Pyschology of Doing Nothing: Forms of Decision Avoidance Result
From Reason and Emotion.” Psychological Bulletin, vol.
129, no. 1 (Jan. 2003), pp. 139-167. You want to use this article for a paper you are writing. But first you need to know if the URI Library has a subscription to this periodical, whether it is print or electronic, and where you can find it. To get this information, use the HELIN Library Catalog. On the HELIN search screen, click on the Collection Type/Format link.
|
Besides Journals/Magazines/Newspapers, HELIN has the following Individual Collections that can be searched separately: Films/Videos/DVDS; Sound Recordings; Government Publications; and Curriculum Resources. Individual Collections can be searched for by keyword, author, subject, or, as with the example below, title. Type the name of the journal or magazine you are looking for in the search box. Capitalization does not matter, and it is usually not necessary to type the complete name of the periodical. Press Enter or click on Search to execute your search. NOTE: Make sure you do not type the title of the article by mistake HELIN can only tell you about the periodical itself, NOT the articles inside it! |
| Your results will
appear in alphabetical order. If URI has a subscription to the print version of a
periodical, the letters URI will appear under the title. If URI has an
electronic or online subscription, the words Electronic Resource will appear
after the title, and either E-Resource or URI will be below the
title. Clicking on the title of the periodical will take you to the holdings record,
which will tell you what issues the Library has in paper or electronically. Print subscription holdings records will include a box with URIs holdings. This will usually be indicated by the phrase URI Current Periodical Rm next to Location. Write down the Call # of the journal, for example BF1 P75. All periodicals in the URI Library are shelved by call number. Check the Librarys holdings in the LIB. HAS field. The word incomplete following the holdings statement indicates that the Library is missing one or more issues or volumes. Be sure to click on Latest Received to make sure the issue you need is not missing. A dash at the end of the holdings statement means that URI has the volumes since the date before the dash. If the Library does not appear to have the issue you need, look for a microform holdings box; some years of the journal might be held in microfilm or microfiche. If a periodical is Continued online, Return to Browse to select the catalog record for the online version.
|
| Clicking on Latest
Received will let you view the periodicals
Check-In Record. The Check-In Record shows the status of individual volumes and
issues. If a volume is BOUND, it is located on the Lower
Level of the Library. If a volume has ARRIVED, it can be
found in the Current Periodical Room on the First Floor.
Sometimes you will see the status BND PREP or TO BND. This means the journal is in the process of being bound and is not currently available. You may also see a message like this one: tb msg #2,3,5. This means that issue numbers 2, 3, and 5 are missing from that volume, and the volume has been temporarily bound in a soft cover. EXPECTED indicates that the journal has not yet arrived.
