| Academic Universe
from Lexis-Nexis is a news, law, and business information service. It provides full-text
access to approximately 6,000 newspapers, periodicals, and reference sources, and is
updated daily. |
| To access Academic Universe,
select it from the list of reference databases at http://www.uri.edu/library/reference_databases/title.html. From the main menu on the left side of the screen, choose the category that most closely matches the information you need, then choose the appropriate sub-category from the list that appears. Once you select a category, you will see the Basic search form for that category. The main menu also displays shortcuts to the most requested information. |
|
| Enter your topic in the Keyword field (in some categories, this field will have a different name, e.g. “Company Name”). The words you enter will be searched in the headline and lead paragraph(s) of articles. You may use advanced search syntax such as Boolean connectors, proximity indicators, and wildcard characters to refine your search. For more information on how to do this, click on Tips or Help at the top of the screen. |
|
You may also add additional search words in the Narrow search with additional terms field. These words will be searched in the full text of the record, in combination with the Keywords you already entered. Select the Date to be searched. You may select a date range from the menu or you may enter specific dates, months, or years by following the Examples given. Some categories of Academic Universe will allow you to use the Source menu to select what types of sources should be searched. Sometimes this menu will include individual titles, but most often it will contain categories of publications. If you want to see specifically what publications are in a given category, click on Source List. If you choose, you may use the Guided Search form instead of the Basic form. The Guided Search Form allows you to indicate whether your terms should be searched in the “Full Text,” “Author,” “Citation,” or other fields. It also allows you to limit your search to particular publications. After you click on the Search button, you will see the Document List, which displays the records retrieved in brief format and reverse chronological order. You may Sort by Relevance to re-display your results by how closely they match your search terms. Both the Expanded List and the KWIC display, which show your search words in the context of surrounding text, allow you to quickly determine whether a document is applicable to your research topic. The FOCUS search blank allows you to narrow your search by entering additional words or phrases. |

| To view the full
text of a document, click on either the Full tab or the title of the periodical.
To print the full text or save it to disk, click on the Print button in the upper right corner of the screen. The document will be re-displayed so that you may use your web browser to print or save the article to disk in HTML format. To e-mail the full text of the article to yourself, click on Email. Placing a check mark in the boxes to the left of the documents in the Document List allows you to select the citation for printing/saving or e-mailing. Note that when you print, save, or e-mail selected documents from this list, you only get the citation to the document, NOT the full text!
