Academic is a news, law, and business information service. It provides full-text
access to approximately 6,000 newspapers, periodicals, and reference sources, and is
updated daily. |
| To access Academic Universe,
select it from the list of reference databases at http://www.uri.edu/library/
reference_databases/title.html. When you first enter LexisNexis Academic, you will see the Quick News Search screen. This screen only allows you to search for news articles published within the last two years. The terms you enter will be searched in the headlines and lead paragraphs of the articles. For more information on using the Quick News Search, click on the Help button or Tips link in the upper left. |

| For a more powerful and comprehensive search, click on the Guided News Search tab. This allows you to search in a variety of national and local news sources. Here, you may use advanced search syntax such as Boolean connectors, proximity indicators, and wildcard characters to refine your search. For more information on how to do this, click on Tips or Help at the top of the screen, or see the instructions below. |

| To search for articles from major
newspapers, at Step One: Select a news category, select General News. At
Step Two: Select a news source, select Major Papers. You may want to browse
the list of options in the pull-down menus to find a sub-category that may more closely
match your search. To search for articles in a specific source, such as The New
York Times or The Providence Journal, click on Source List. Enter your search terms in the blanks provided. Using the pull-down menus, you can specify where your search terms should appear. Other options include "Headline," "Full Text," "Caption," and "Author." Select the Date to be searched. You may select a date range from the pull-down menu or you may enter specific dates, months, or years. After you click on the Search button, you will see the Document List, which displays the records retrieved in brief format and reverse chronological order. You may Sort by Relevance to re-display your results by how closely they match your search terms. Both the Expanded List and the KWIC display, which show your search words in the context of surrounding text, allow you to quickly determine whether a document is applicable to your research topic. The FOCUS search blank allows you to narrow your search by entering additional words or phrases. |
Placing a check mark in the boxes to the left of the documents in the Document List allows you to select the citation for printing/saving or e-mailing. Note that when you print, save, or e-mail selected documents from this list, you only get the citation to the document, NOT the full text! |
| To view the full
text of a document, click on either the Full tab or the title of the periodical.
To print the full text or save it to disk, click on the Print button in the upper right corner of the screen. The document will be re-displayed so that you may use your web browser to print or save the article to disk in HTML format. To email the full text of the article to yourself, click on Email.
