Treaties and International Agreements Online (Oceana)

Treaties and International Agreements Online is a full-text database of over 15,000 treaties of which the United States is a signatory.  Coverage is from the 1783 Treaty of Paris to the present and is updated monthly. Unratified treaties, proposed treaties and treaties no longer in force are also included.

Note:  This database uses pop-up windows for many of its features. If you have pop-up blocking software, you must turn it off in order to use this database effectively.

To access the Treaties and International Agreements Online, select it from the list of Reference Databases at http://www.uri.edu/library/reference_databases/title.html. On the Oceana screen, under Oceana Online-Your Subscriptions, select Treaties and International Agreements Online and the Quick Search screen will appear.

To search the database, you may type in a keyword in the Text field. If you know the name of your treaty, you may type the full title or part of the title in the Title field. You may refine your search by selecting a primary or secondary subject or country/party from the lists in the pull down boxes for those fields. A search may also be limited by date or a date range.

An Advanced Search allows you to search by subject, citation, and treaty status. For more information regarding Advanced Search, click on the Help button above the Search Page or inquire at the Reference Desk.

After you click on the Search button, the Results screen will appear which lists the documents for your search in reverse chronological order. Each result will include the title of the treaty, CITA number (a classification number unique to the database which links treaties and their amendments), subject heading, date signed, and the parties that signed it.

To view the full text of a treaty, click on the title on the Results screen.  The full text of the treaty will appear with your search terms highlighted.
   

Click on Clear Highlights at the top of the document if you don't want to have the search terms highlighted. If you would prefer to see the treaty as it appeared in its original publication, click on Source Image at the top of the document. If the image is available, a pop-up window will appear with the pdf file of the document. To get the full citation and a list of of the signing parties of your treaty, click on Documents Details at the top of the document. A pop-up window will appear with the pertinent information.

To print your document, you may employ the Print Document and Details button found at the at the bottom of the Document Details screen. If you are on the pdf Source Image screen, you many print the document by clicking on the print icon at the top of the screen. To save your document or e-mail it as an attachment, on the Source Image screen, click on the "save a copy" or e-mail or e-mail icons at the top of the screen.
