WilsonWeb

WilsonWeb offers a common interface for searching a number of databases at URI — Art Abstracts, Art Index Retrospective, Biological and Agricultural Index Plus, Education Full Text, Education Index Retrospective, Humanities & Social Science Index Retrospective, and Readers’ Guide Retrospective.

To access a WilsonWeb database, select it from the list of Reference Databases at http://www.uri.edu/library/reference_databases/title.html. When you see the top of the database search screen, make sure the database you need is checked. Biological and Agricultural Index will be used as an example in this guide. Opening the Database Selection Area allows you to select and search other databases without returning to the Library's web site.

Type terms in the query boxes. The default setting of "All - Smart Search" may return results that are too broad; select Keyword from the pull down menu to perform a more targeted search. See the Help feature for more searching advice and tips.

On the left, you can use search operators to further refine your search: AND (requires both terms to be in each result), OR (requires either term to be in each result), and NOT (eliminates a term from your results). To truncate a term, use an asterisk: for example, gene* will retrieve gene, genes, genetic, but also generation.

Click on the article title (blue) to see the full display with abstract. The percentages to the left of the check boxes indicate how relevanct each article is to your search terms. Check the boxes to mark those you want to print, e-mail, or download — see the blue Print Email Save link in the blue bar at the top of the page (not shown in these images) for further instructions.

WilsonWeb provides abstracts in the full display, but does not provide full text for every article listed. For any article for which full text is not available, click on the Search for Full-Text button above the title of the article. Click on the Search For Full Text link to determine if the article is available online through another database or in print. If the full text is not available either online or in print through the University Library, copy down the citation provided by the database and use Interlibrary Loan to obtain the article. To return to your search results, close the window.
