Business Reference Table
Standard & Poor’s Industry Surveys. 1974–   (Quarterly).  Latest five years on Reference.
Current analysis of over 50 broad industry groups. Each survey is approximately 50 pages long and covers the current industry environment, industry trends, and how the industry operates. Industry statistics and a comparative analysis of key companies in the industry are also included.

U.S. Industry & Trade Outlook. 1998– (Annual).  Latest on Govt. Pub. Reference.
Formerly titled the U.S. Industrial Outlook (1960-1994), this publication provides an industry-by-industry overview of the U.S. economy. Each of the 50 chapters focuses on a different industry, giving an industry overview, global industry trends, factors affecting future industry growth, an examination of industry subsectors, and key industry statistics.

The Value Line Investment Survey. 1981– (Weekly). Latest on Reserve.
Value Line is an investment advisory service that continually analyzes and reports on 1,700 companies in about 95 industries. Part 3 is organized by industry. At the beginning of each industry section, a one-page general overview of the industry is provided. Some composite industry statistics are given.

U.S. Industry Profiles: USIP The Leading 100. 1995– (Biennial). Latest on Reference.
Covers 100 significant U.S. industries. Each 5-6 page industry profile gives an industry snapshot and outlook and discusses industry organization, work force, research and technology, and the position of the industry in the global economy. Further sources of information such as industry associations, periodicals, and statistical sources are listed. Related titles are the Encyclopedia of Emerging Industries and the Encyclopedia of Global Industries.

“Annual Report on American Industry.” Forbes. 1977– (Annual).
Published every year in the first January issue of Forbes, the “Annual Report on American Industry” covers each major U.S. industry with a short article and a list of companies and their financial performance. Available on the Internet at http://www.forbes.com/forbes/archives/.

Reference Desk
North American Industry Classification System: United States 1997. 1997.
Lists more than 18,000 types of businesses and their NAICS codes. NAICS is a new industry classification system developed jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. A great deal of industry information, published both privately and publicly, is organized by industry code. NAICS replaces the Standard Industrial Classification (still available at the Reference Desk and on the Internet at http://www.osha.gov/oshstats/sicser.html).

Economic Census. (Every five years).
The government conducts a complete economic census every 5 years (in years ending in 2 and 7).  Data available include number of establishments, number of employees, payroll, and value added/sales/receipts. Information is presented by industry and geographically by state, county, and city/town. Individual titles are: Census of Manufactures; Census of Retail Trade; Census of Wholesale Trade; Census of Service Industries; Census of Financial, Insurance, and Real Estate Industries; Census of Construction Industries; Census of Transportation, Communications, and Utilities; Census of Mineral Industries; Census of Agriculture; and Census of Governments. Released every year, County Business Patterns provides the number of employees, annual payroll, total number of establishments, and the number of establishments by employment class size for every industry. This family of Ward’s Business Directory titles presents statistics at both the national and metro levels on specific industries. The information is compiled from a variety of federal sources and is combined with lists of the leading public and private corporations in each industry. The individual titles are published either annually or biennially.

S & P Analysts’ Handbook. 1994– (Annual with monthly updates). Latest year on Reserve.
Formerly titled Analysts’ Handbook (1968, 1982-1993), this publication contains approximately 30 years of composite corporate per-share data for approximately 90 industries.
