This is a guide to selected World Wide Web sources of
information related to Hispanic and Latino issues. It was compiled for the URI Graduate
School of Library and Information Studies Diversity on the Web workshop, October 19, 2000
as part of URI Diversity Week 2000.

- A mega-site, created by Francisco Garcia, contains links to
many sites of interest to Latinos. However, it hasn't been updated since July, 2000, and
Francisco doesn't provide much information about who he is or what he does. Nevertheless,
this is an impressive information resource.

- Website for the National Association to promote library and
information services to Latinos and the Spanish speaking. An excellent resource for
librarians which includes news, job offerings, an HTML tutorial in Spanish, publishers and
distributors of Spanish language materials, and much more.

- Internet Resources for Latin America
- Created by Patricia Promis, Librarian for Latin American
Studies at the University of Arizona, this site is a gateway to internet resources, which
covers culture, history, government and economics, and much more.

- Hispanic Reading Room of the Library of Congress
- The Library of Congress has the world's finest collection on
the history and culture of Latin America, Iberia, and the Caribbean, including the
Handbook of Latin American Studies, which provides abstracts and complete bibliographic
information for published materials from and about Latin America on a wide range of topics
in the humanities and social sciences and covers more than 50 years of scholarly
literature in Latin American studies.

Librarian at New Mexico State University, this is a directory of web sites relating to the
US-Mexico Border and Latinos in the United States.

- A joint project of the American Academy of Research
Historians of Medieval Spain and the University of Central Arkansas, the site presents the
full text of recent, but out-or-print university press monographs, published in English,

- A commerical site produced in English and Spanish which
teaches basic internet use. A good resource for patrons new to internet technology.

- RETA (Resources for Teaching about the Americas)
- Another educational resource which includes lesson plans, a
resource materials database and a photo archive, created by the Latin American and Iberian
Institute at the University of New Mexico.

- Association of Research Libraries Latin Americanist
Research Pilot Project
- The Latin Americanist Research Resources Project is an
initiative of the Association of Research Libraries
(ARL). The forty-four Participating
Libraries have accepted institutional collecting responsibilities for a cross-section
of over 400 journals published in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica,
Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.
The collecting responsibilities include acquiring each issue of the journal and making
available through rapid delivery interlibrary loan, articles found in the journal.

- James Madison University's site provides access to lists of
Hispanic books for children. This is an excellent resource for teachers, parents and
librarians.

- Celebrating Hispanic Heritage
- Gale Research's site provides fifty biographies of notable
Hispanic Americans, a timeline covering 500 years of Hispanic American history,
information onholidays and celebrations, and a music section covering corrido, musica
nortena, salsa, tropical, tejano, rock en Espanol and Latin pop. There is also an
annotated list of links to other Hispanic sites.

- A bilingual site dedicated to the celebration of Dia de los
Muertos in Mexico. Includes photographs, recipes, an extensive bibliography, information

- Online version of the print magazine devoted to news and

- League of United Latin American Citizens
- LULAC is the largest and oldest Hispanic
Organization in the United States, advancing the economic condition, educational
attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through
community-based programs operating at more than 600 LULAC councils nationwide. The
organization involves and serves all Hispanic nationality groups, and has focused heavily
on education, civil rights, and employment.

promise of their future.
