The
University Library Faculty Development Committee sponsors a series of
informal, lunch-time discussions called “Hot Topics.” Anyone who is
interested is welcome to attend and participate in the discussion. Feel free to
bring your lunch.
The information on our
next Hot Topic discussion is as follows:
Date: Wednesday,
April 4, 2007
Time: 12:00 noon -
1:30 p.m.
Place: Conference
Room A, Library Administration, University Library, Kingston
Topic: Distance
Learning
ACRL guidelines say that libraries should
provide equivalent services to distance learners as they do for all other
patrons. How does that affect URI Libraries’ services?
Chat Reference, electronic reserves,
interlibrary loan are all in place, but there are other services that may
not be as simple to provide — instruction, access
to print journals, book delivery.
Presenter: Jim
Kinnie, Reference
Suggested Readings:
- ACRL Guideline for Distance Learning
Library Services
http://www.ala.org/ala/acrl/acrlstandards/guidelinesdistancelearning.htm
- The Guidelines are concerned with
“ensuring the delivery of equivalent library
services” to patrons no matter where they are.

E-Learning Spaces: Librarians in Course Management Systems

- Presenter Jim Kinnie: “Since
a lot of our support for distance learners is addressed by existing
resources (electronic course reserves, IM reference, Interlibrary loan),
I have focused much attention on librarian involvement in course
management systems like WebCT. This is a link to a digest of the current
issues discussion at ALA Midwinter in which I was an invited participant.

- The Embedded Librarian: Bringing Library
Services to Distance Learners

- Presenter Jim Kinnie: “This
is a paper I delivered at the Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning
last August. After a literature review of articles on librarians and CMS
there is a section documenting my experience of being embedded in several
URI WebCT courses.”
The last two resources have bibliographies
for those who want to pursue the subject in more depth.
