Information Literacy Instruction for students of URI 101: Traditions and Transformations
Goals of the Library instruction session
- Introduce students to the Library as place (for group work, study, research and information seeking).
- Introduce the array of services the Library provides that support student research and learning.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will identify primary service areas of the library in order to become familiar with the building.
- Students will discuss searching the open web in order to evaluate a source's suitability for college-level research.
- Students will use the Library catalog in order to find books.
- Students will explore features of the Library's web site in order to locate services and materials for college-level research.
Instruction/How We'll Help the Students Achieve the Outcomes
These four outcomes are supported by a two-part package consisting of 1) a
Pre-Activity done by students as part of their E-Textbook assignments before the Library visit and 2) the Library Experience session facilitated by librarians during the students’ visits to the library with their URI 101 class.
The Pre-Activity serves as an introduction to the materials, and Library Experience session addresses and reinforces the outcomes by addressing available services and resources.
