URI 101 Library Experience

Information Literacy Instruction for students of URI 101: Traditions and Transformations

Goals of the Library instruction session

  1. Introduce students to the Library as place (for group work, study, research and information seeking).
  2. Introduce the array of services the Library provides that support student research and learning.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will identify primary service areas of the library in order to become familiar with the building.
  2. Students will discuss searching the open web in order to evaluate a source's suitability for college-level research.
  3. Students will use the Library catalog in order to find books.
  4. Students will explore features of the Library's web site in order to locate services and materials for college-level research.

Instruction/How We'll Help the Students Achieve the Outcomes
These four outcomes are supported by a two-part package consisting of 1) a Pre-Activity done by students as part of their E-Textbook assignments before the Library visit and 2) the Library Experience session facilitated by librarians during the students’ visits to the library with their URI 101 class.

The Pre-Activity serves as an introduction to the materials, and Library Experience session addresses and reinforces the outcomes by addressing available services and resources.
