The Iran-Contra scandal became an issue of heated debate within the federal government and the nation. High ranking military officials were indicted on charges of selling highly-lethal weaponry to Iran and transferring the proceeds to Contra rebels in Nicaragua in order to help them overthrow the incumbent Sandinista government. Inquiries were made as to what extent President Reagan was aware of these activities. In August, 1987, he addressed the nation on the issue. (John H. Chafee Papers: Aug 12, 1987, Mar 1987)
