1894-1901

This collection contains Rhode Island College student essays from the years 1894 to 1901, including essays submitted for the Lippitt Essay Prize.  According to the Rhode Island College annual reports for the years 1898 through 1901, the Lippitt Prize consisted of a purse of one hundred dollars, which had been offered through the generosity of the then ex-Governor Charles Warren Lippitt.  The prize was divided into two, sixty dollars for 1st place and forty dollars for 2nd place. The award was given for the best written and delivered essays on the history of Rhode Island during the American Revolution.  These essays were delivered in the style of a Cincinnati Oration and read on the Monday preceding commencement. The Lippitt Prize was first offered in 1898 and discontinued after 1901.
