<head>Biographical note</head>
<dao xlink:href="http://dl.lib.brown.edu/riamco/graphics/US-RPB.jpg"/>
<p>Casey Miller (1920-1997), a writer and editor, was a pioneering advocate of nonsexist language. Wrote the influential book, <title render="italic">The Handbook of Nonsexist Writing</title> (1980) with long time partner and literary collaborator, Kate Swift (1923-2011). From 1949 until 1984, Miller corresponded with and supported foster children through Foster Parent’s Plan for War Children (now Childreach). Her papers are at the University of Oregon.</p>

<scopecontent encodinganalog="520"><head>Scope and Content Note</head>
<p>This collection contains the letters received from foster children sponsored by Casey Miller: Nadine Dupied (France), Park Soon Ok (Korea), Ma Mei Ying (Hong Kong), and Edith Mosquera (Colombia). Also included are receipts for Miller’s contributions to Foster Parent's Plan, newsletters and flyers as well as direct correspondence from Plan to Ms. Casey. Envelopes were removed from the collection with exception of those heavily annotated. Photographs and histories of the children accompany some of the letters. Nadine Dupied continued her correspondence with Miller for a time after her eligibility as a foster child ended. Of interest is an article published in Miller’s hometown newspaper, <title render="italic">The Greenwich Time</title>, Aug. 22, 1954 highlighting foster children "adopted" by those in the area.</p>
