Homework - Associations and Statistical Information
| PART 1 1. Use the Encyclopedia of Associations [Ref. AS22 .E5] or Associations Unlimited [available from http://www.uri.edu/library/reference_databases/ref.html] to find an association related to your Final Project topic. Be flexible. For example, if there is not an association on tigers, try an association on endangered species. If there is not an association devoted to the memory of Woodstock, try rock and roll history. If there is nothing on the War of 1812, try American military history. If there is nothing on Atlantis, try ancient history or archaeology. And so on. You get the idea. Make sure the organization that you pick has a web site. Note: If you are accessing Associations Unlimited from off-campus and you are asked for a password, put in your CLAN barcode (R.I. public library system). If you dont have a CLAN card, go to the Reference Desk and well sign you on. 2. Photocopy the page (if youre using the Encyclopedia ) or print the Web page (if youre using Associations Unlimited) with the entry for the association. Attach to this sheet. 3. Go to the Web site of the association. Print out the home page and attach it to this sheet. 4. Look around the site. What kind of information is available? Is there anything
useful for your Final Project? If so what? Describe below. 5. Is some of the information on this site restricted to members
only? If so, what? PART 2 1. Use the Statistical Abstract of the United States [at the Reference Desk or online at http://www.census.gov/prod/www/statistical-abstract-02.html] to find a statistic related to your Final Project topic. If you cant find anything related to your topic, pick any statistic that interests you. Hint: Start with the index in the back of the volume. The number it gives you is a table number, not a page number. 2. Photocopy the page (if youre using the book) or print the page (if youre using the web) with the table you selected. Attach to this sheet. 3. On the photocopy/printout, circle the title of the Source at the bottom of the table. 4. From the library homepage, go into the HELIN library catalog. Search by title for
the title of the Source you circled in Step 3. Does the URI Library have this
source? Is there a link from the HELIN catalog to an online version of the source? 5. If your Source title is available in the URI Library or on the Web, access this resource and find additional statistical information on the topic you looked up. Photocopy or print one table and attach it to this sheet. You will hand in a total of about 6 pages: * This worksheet (2 sheets). |
