856 Fields (Electronic Access) in Bibliographic Records for Monographs

 1.  When a DLC bibliographic record for a monograph contains an 856 field for Table of Contents (TOC) and no 505 field (contents):

 
            a.  MACC Unit will check HELIN to see if any other HELIN      Library  has used this record.

 b.  If someone has used this record they may have added a 505 (contents) field or modified and activated the 856 (e.g. [View Table of Contents] will be seen in 856).  If they have done either of those two things, MACC Unit will attach an item, update the that bibliographic record (locations), and update our holdings on OCLC.

 c.  If no one else has this title, return to OCLC.

 d.  On OCLC, verify the information for the book and process as usual.  Leave the 856 as is.

 2.  When a DLC bibliographic record for a monograph contains an 856 field for TOC and a 505 field:

              MACC Unit will delete the 856 field and process the item as usual.

 3.  When a DLC bibliographic record for a monograph contains an 856 for a publishers description:

              MACC Unit will delete that 856 field.

 4.  If a bibliographic record for a monograph is NON-DLC, send to Cataloging.

 5.  The Cataloging Unit will follow the steps described above in 1, 2, and 3 for URI, CCE & Pell Library materials.
