Government Publications Call Numbers
Consistent formatting of numbers used in indexed fields is necessary for the proper
construction of the numbers themselves and for the accurate sorting of the numbers in
computer programs. One important aspect of a numbers construction is the use of
spacing. Generally, a space must be inserted between letters and numbers unless there is
intervening punctuation. The only exception to this is the use of parentheses. One space
must be inserted before and after a parenthesis whether it is preceded or succeeded by a
letter or number. One space should appear before and after symbols such as the ampersand.
These spacing conventions are used in the 086, 099, 440 and 949 fields.

Special Collections
No items in Special Collections circulate. All 949 fields should reflect this with ¦s
o ¦t 1. Special Collections include the Rhode Island Collection, Archives, Rare Books,
Eichenberg, etc. Rhode Island and Archives are the only collections to be labeled. Theses,
which are part of Archives, do not get call numbers. DO NOT LABEL RARE BOOKS.
Government Publications
Most government and state documents circulate. Many do not. Be sure to note if an item
is stamped or item is labeled as "non-circulating." No "Govt Pub Ref"
items circulate. Be sure that the appropriate codes are included in the 949 for these
items.
