Amar K. Lahiri

Head of Cataloging

Professor Amar K. Lahiri (B.Com., Dip. Lang., Dip.Lib., M.A. University of Calcutta; M.L.S. University of Rhode Island, M.A. in Political Science, University of Rhode Island) joined the faculty of the University of Rhode Island Libraries in 1970.

Prior to coming to the University of Rhode Island, Professor Lahiri  practiced his profession at the London School of Economics, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at libraries in India.  He has served as Head of the Cataloging Unit at URI for nearly twenty years and oversaw the movement of his department from a manual operation to one of the most technologically developed areas in the University.

As a scholar, Professor Lahiri has written a book detailing and interpreting cataloging rules and procedures, and has also written numerous refereed articles dealing with his specialty of bibliographic control.  Two of his most recent publications include, “Trends of Cataloging in the Academic Libraries of the USA.”  (in Russian) Journal of the Russian Library Association.  March, 1999.    pp. 1-6; and “Impact of Glasnost and Perestroika on the Russian Libraries.”  Journal of Educational Media and Library Science, vol. 39(2); 2001,  pp.114-130.

Professor Lahiri spent his last sabbatical in Russia, advising libraries, especially the St. Petersburg Technological Institute, on how to automate library systems.  He continues to give guest lectures to graduate library school seminars and advises Library School graduate students during professional field experiences on a regular basis.
