Karen M. Ramsay
Head of Monographic Acquisitions and Copy
Cataloging
Karen M. Ramsay has been at
the University of Rhode Island since 1970, first as an undergraduate (B.A. Secondary
Education, 1974), then as a graduate student (M.L.S., 1977) and employee (1974, Film
Librarian). She came to the Library in 1983
and joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in January 2001 as an acquisitions
librarian and is now head of the newly formed Monographic Acquisitions/Copy Cataloging
Unit (MACC).
As the head of the MACC Unit,
Karen oversees all new monographic purchases for the University Library collections,
planning and monitoring budget allocations, receipts, processing, and ultimately access to
these materials. There were over 10,000 volumes added during the 2004-2005 fiscal year
with an annual monographic budget of over $300,000. The
MACC Unit is also responsible for database maintenance as well as inventory control of
main librarys circulating stacks.
Her professional duties also
include serving as subject selector and Library liaison to the Department of Kinesiology
and the Physical Therapy Program.
Professor Ramsay has been an
Adjunct Faculty member of the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies (GSLIS)
since 1994. She has taught Organization of
Information (LSC 505) and currently teaches the Technical Services course (LSC 506) each
spring. She has also been involved in the
joint GSLIS/Rhode Island Library Association (RILA) Mentor program. Each semester she conducts Library tours and
orientation session for new GSLIS students with Associate Professor Mary MacDonald.
Karen
also represents the University on various HELIN Consortium committees concerned with
acquisitions and the online catalog. These
committees set policies, standards and guidelines for the HELIN member institutions. She is also a member of the Association for
Library Collections & Technical Services, a division of the American Library
Association where she serves as a member of the Acquisitions Section Publications
Committee.
At a more local level, Karen
is a long time member of ACRL/New England and RILA where she has served on the membership
committee for several years. On campus, she has served on numerous committees and is
currently in her second term on the Faculty Senate Executive Committee.
Her scholarship and
professional activities have produced several articles and a book chapter in the newly
published Innovative redesign and reorganization of library technical services. She has made presentations at national
conferences, including ACRL and the Charleston Conference.
