Library Technician in CPR (Sunday thru Thursday)
CLASS TITLE: Library Technician, Current Periodical Room
DIVISION: University Libraries
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
- Receive periodical (serial) issues in all formats, recording receipt data in the HELIN
catalog, using the Serials module of the Innovative Interfaces, Inc. (III) integrated
library system.
- Assist patrons in identifying and locating journals in the University Libraries using
the HELIN catalog. Assist in interpreting serials information in the III serials module to
patrons. Direct patrons to Reference Unit for answers to reference-related questions.
- Responsible for hiring, training, and supervision of student employees who assist in the
Current Periodical Room, Sunday-Thursday evenings.
- Carefully track periodical issues, verifying that correct issues are received. Enter
claims for missing issues. Identify new titles and title changes as they are received.
- Review computer-produced claims reports and takes action as necessary.
- Route periodicals to Reference and Reserve Units as appropriate. Forward cancelled
titles, unidentified receipts, and other problems to Serials Classified Librarian.
- Maintain order in Current Periodical Room. Type shelf labels for new titles and title
changes. Remove outdated shelf life titles when time expires. Adjust shelf arrangement to
allow for expansion and contraction of titles in specialized subject areas. Train student
employees in shelf reading.
- Maintain URI Librarys records in the CRIARL Union List, using Innovative
Interfaces Union List module.
- Date stamp and shelve periodicals when necessary. Assist with binding pick-up as needed.
- Additional duties as required.
WORK SCHEDULE: Sunday Thursday, 4:00PM 12:00 Midnight
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Experience with library computer systems and databases, preferably Innovative
Interfaces, Inc. (III) and the HELIN database.
Ability to work well with library staff and patrons (students and faculty)
Attention to detail; concern for accuracy; ability to enter data quickly and accurately
into library computer systems.
Preferred:
Familiarity with bibliographic data and publication of library materials, especially
serials.
Demonstrated analytic and problem solving skills.
