Position Descriptions

Library Technician - CPR - (Tuesday thru Saturday)

CLASS TITLE: Library Technician: Check-in and Claims Technician.

DIVISION: University Libraries, Acquisitions Unit.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  1. Receive periodical issues, recording receipt data in the Serials module of the Innovative Interfaces, Inc. (III) integrated library system.
  2. Enter claims for periodical issues not received in proper sequence. Create lists of lapsed periodical subscriptions using the Management module of the III system. Follow up on missing issues and lapsed subscriptions, using monthly claim checker and information from online serials sources (EBSCONet, OCLC, HELIN).
  3. Assist patrons in identifying and locating journals in the University Libraries using the HELIN catalog. Assist in interpreting serial information in the III serials module to patrons.
  4. Hire and train student assistants in the Current Periodical Room for work on Fridays and Saturdays.
  5. Identify and initiate processing of newly received titles and title changes. Initiate investigation of unidentified receipts using online databases including OCLC, HELIN, and EBSCONet.
  6. Maintain Current Periodical Room when necessary, including re-shelving, shelf reading, etc.
  7. Date stamp and shelve newly received periodicals when necessary.
  8. Other duties as required.

 QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

Experience with library computer systems and bibliographic databases.

Ability to work well with library staff and patrons (students and faculty).

Ability to analyze serial publication patterns to resolve claiming problems.

Attention to detail; concern for accuracy; ability to enter data quickly and accurately into library computer systems.

 

Preferred:

Experience with library computer systems, preferably Innovative Interfaces, Inc. and the HELIN database.

Familiarity with bibliographic data and publication of library materials.

Demonstrated analytic and problem solving skills.

 

SCHEDULE: 8:00AM – 4:00 PM, Tuesday – Saturday during the academic year. Intercession and holidays: Monday – Friday.
