michael vocino
Collection Management Officer

Professor Michael Vocino has degrees in library science, cultural/film studies, and political science from Boston University, the University of Rhode Island and the Universiteit van Amsterdam.  He is a life member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society for Academic Achievement. He joined the faculty at the University of Rhode Island Libraries as a humanities cataloger in 1979.

Since 1980, he has held the library administrative positions of Head of Government Publications, Head of Cataloging, Chair and Coordinator of Technical Services, Director of Libraries, Interim Dean of Libraries and since 1998, he serves as Collection Management Officer for the University Libraries where he is responsible for an annual materials budget of over $2.5 million.

In addition to his librarianship, Professor Vocino held a joint appointment in the Department of Political Science for many years where he taught courses in political theory and public ethics.  He now holds a joint appoint in the Department of Film and Media Studies where he teaches courses in film theory and film history.  He is also an adjunct Professor in the URI Graduate School of Library and Information Studies where he occasionally teaches courses in information ethics and information management.

Professor Vocino has edited three monographs, authored several chapters in books, numerous refereed and non-refereed articles and he reviews online resources on a continual basis.  He has garnered nearly $700,000 in grant money from the federal government as well as from private sources for his projects in library automation and public ethics.

Professor Vocino's research interests continue to be information ethics, public ethics, minority rights and the intersection of those rights with film production and theory.  He also does research on the development of libraries in the Mezzogiorno of Italy.

Professor Vocino is the bibliographer for political science, african-american studies, gay studies, film studies and military science.
