Finding Books

This section contains information on how to: tell which books are available using HELIN (the online catalog at URI), read call numbers (which are like an address for each book in the library), read a catalog record in HELIN and how best to search the HELIN catalog to find what you need.

One of the most important things you’ll need to know in order to be a successful student is how to find books. The books in this library are an excellent source of both historical and current information. URI has over one million books to help you do research on any number of topics.

Besides finding books, you can use the HELIN catalog to find the videos, DVDs, CDs, and periodicals (journals, newspapers, magazines) carried by the URI library. However, you can only find periodicals by their titles in the catalog; you cannot find any information on individual articles. To find articles, you must use a reference database or a print index. Go to Finding Articles for information on using these resources.

In addition to books you can search for other resources in the HELIN catalog such as videos, CDs and government publications.
