Searching by subject

Each item in the library is assigned one or more Library of Congress Subject Headings that are used to describe the subject or topic of that item. By identifying the proper subject heading, you should be able to find all books in the HELIN system on a particular topic. Click on the LC Subject radio button on the HELIN home page and enter a subject:

subject search box

This will bring up a list of subjects that match your search:

Note that in addition to bringing up a number of subject headings, in this case 177, this search also brings up a set of related subjects. Clicking on the related subjects will bring you additional topics that are related to your search.

The Library of Congress Subject Headings also exist in a printed version, which may help you to begin your search. Ask a librarian at the Reference Desk to point them out to you.
