Black History Month 2001

 Schedule


We are pleased to announce that the campus community will celebrating
 Black History Month February 1-28 , 2001. Following
is a preliminary schedule of events, subject to some change.


  • Lecture Saturday, February 3, 2001 6:00 p.m.
    Annual Dinner of the South County Coalition Against Racism. 
    Dr. Peniel Joseph, Assistant Professor, History, University of Rhode Island,
     will discuss the events and experiences that have shaped his ideas 
    and perspective.  6:00 p.m., Church of God, 209 Allen Ave., Peacedale.  
    $ 13.00 admission.  Fundraiser benefiting a racial justice
     scholarship at South Kingston High School.

  • Lecture Wednesday, February 7, 2001 7:30 p.m. 
    "Multiculturalism and the Law," Seventh Annual Lecture on Multiculturalism
    at URI. Patricia J. Williams from Columbia University will discuss critical
    race theory. 7:30 p.m. Edwards Auditorium for more information, call

    "Eyes on the Prize". Video and discussion about the U.S. civil
    rights movement with Melvin Wade, Director of the Multicultural
    Center. Refreshments will be served.

    The Black Diaspora: A Celebration of Song and Dance.
    This celebration of the creative energies and overwhelming
    contribution to the performing arts by persons of African
    heritage is a sampler of the black experience. TWYCE
    will be performing.

  • Lecture Tuesday, February 20, 2001 7:00-9:00 p.m.
    "Engineering in the Motherland". Dr. Wole Soboyejo,
    Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at
    Princeton. He will be discussing engineering projects in 
    Nigeria.
