Lecture on Multiculturalism 2003
Dr. Gilroy

The 9th Annual Lecture on Multiculturalism
February 13, 2003 at 7:30pm
Chafee Auditorium

Paul Gilroy, Professor of Sociology and African American Studies at Yale University, will present the Annual Lecture on Multiculturalism on Thursday, February 13, 2003 at 7:30 pm in Chafee Auditorium.  He is a leading British cultural theorist and professor of Sociology and African American studies at Yale University. He is an extremely well known figure in cultural studies. His works concern the interaction of race and culture. Prior to Yale, Gilroy was the Professor of Sociology at Goldsmith's College of The University of London; he has contributed a great deal to African Diaspora intellectual and political exchange.

Born in London, England. Gilroy received his Ph.D. from Birmingham University in 1986. His previous scholarly experience includes lecturer in sociology and Lecturer on black British culture. Professor Gilroy's importance in the field of multiculturalism is derived from his writings, which include for The Black Atlantic: Modernity and Double Consciousness. (The Black Atlantic has won the American Book Award in 1994) In addition to his previous publications he is currently completing a book titled Real Time: a story of black music in the second half of the twentieth century, and a survey of the politics of race in modern Britain.

Gilroy's publications are somewhat controversial based on people's reaction to There Ain't No Black in the Union Jack: The Cultural Politics of Race and Nation, in the book he explained what it means to be black in late twentieth-century Great Britain. His work is also conceptually rich, because of his personal writing style. "Gilroy has always been a maverick. His books are difficult in both senses of the word--hard to read (although always rewarding) and highly troublesome," commented Bryan Cheyette.

Gilroy's talk is free and open to the public. No tickets are needed for admission. For more information, call (401) 874-2851. He can be reached at Yale University, 493 College St., P.O. Box 203388, New Haven, CT 06520-3388; fax: 203-432-2102.
