Celebrations Around the World
This is an event where we celebrate the coming of the New Year from almost every angle of the globe. Celebrations Around the World is a festival of traditions commemorating the ways in which diverse cultures celebrate, marking the closing of the old year and the coming of the new year. Students will share and present music and customs from holidays such as: Kwanzaa, Christmas, Ramadan, Three Kings, Diwali, Hanukkah, and Chinese New Year. [visit the website]

Diversity Awards
Awards honor the outstanding contributions and achievements of student, faculty, administrators, staff and friends toward developing a more inclusive, diverse and equitable campus community at URI and increasing the capacity of the University to reach its fullest educational, cultural, economic, and social potential. Diversity Quilt
Diversity Quilt symbolizes the coming together of the campus community at URI. Each of the blocks of the Diversity Quilt tells a personal story about the meaning and significance of multiculturalism.

Diversity Week
This program celebrates the importance of diversity and identity in higher education, in the workplace, in the community, and in the global arena. The core of Diversity Week are the schedule of workshops taught by faculty, staff, administrators, students, and friends. Other current activities include a keynote address co-sponsored with the URI Honors Colloquium; a poetry slam/open mic; a video and film festival; a series of interactive diversity workshops; a graduate student research symposium; a peace and harmony meditation; a Pangaea music concert; a drama performance; and music workshops. Co-sponsored by the Diversity Week Planning Committee and the Multicultural Center, Diversity Week is a collaboration with the Psychology Department, the Sociology Department, other academic departments, and URI Student Senate, and assorted student groups. Faculty and Staff of Color Reception [visit the website]

Faculty Associates Program
The program provides a forum for faculty to examine the growing global impact of multiculturalism on pedagogy and curriculum development, research, co-curricular programming, and community service learning with the intent of fostering quality educational experiences with students. Thirty-five faculty members across diverse disciplines constitute each group. The Faculty Associates Program is a collaboration with the Instructional Development Program and is funded by a $100,000/3-year grant from the Hewlett Foundation. [visit the website]

Lectures on Multiculturalism [visit the website]
The Annual Lectures on Multiculturalism is a prestigious series featuring nationally known scholars presenting lectures on the significance and impact of multiculturalism in a global arena. Beginning in fall 1999 there will be a lecture each semester. The Annual Lecture on Multiculturalism is frequently a collaboration with the Office of the President, the Honors Committee, the Student Entertainment Committee, assorted academic departments, and student organizations. Martin Luther King, Jr. Week
This celebration pays homage to the life of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Ir., the civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Past activities have included a Unity March and Candlelight Vigil, faculty orkshops, and a Unity Breakfast. Northeast Multicultural College Administrators Association
The mission of the Northeast Multicultural College Administrators Association is to improve the capacity of multicultural practitioners in higher education enabling them to enhance the quality of learning and development, the delivery of services, and the attainment of success for all the entire campus community- especially underrepresented students. Student Organization Leadership Conference
The conference aims to help past, present and future student organization leader assess their leadership and interaction styles, develop vision and mission statements, and create action plans. [visit the website]

"Unity Weekend
Unity Weekend develops relationships and enhances communication across boundaries of racial and cultural identity. Occurring in a retreat setting away from the campus, Unity Weekend utilizes small group dynamics to interact with selected students in an intimate setting. Techniques utilized include the Fishbowl and the Shout Out. Unity Weekend is a collaboration with the Center for Student Leadership Development, the Office of Student Life, and assorted student groups. [visit the website]

World Voices, World Visions
This is a one-week music, dance and art summer camp for all ages. The overarching goal of World Voices, World Visions is to understand and appreciate the diverse streams of global culture, identity, and community through exposure to and participation in traditional arts as well as pubic dialogue. By offering quality learning experiences with master musicians, dancers, writers, storytellers, dramatists; by creating safe spaces for public dialogue, and by presenting opportunities for performance, this summer program seeks to acquaint participants with the origins and development of American traditions, the negotiation of "global citizenship" between individuals and groups, the strengthening of democratic institutions, and the contemporary search for meaning of self, family, community, nation, and species.
