During the Gilded Age, Newport was the summer home of America's elite, including the Vanderbilts, one of America's richest families. This tour includes the scenic Ocean Drive and a visit to The Breakers, one of the grandest villas ever built in the United States.
Your narrated tour along 10-Mile Ocean Drive offers spectacular views of Newport's rugged southern coastline as well as a promenade down famed Bellevue Avenue to view the fabulous “summer cottages.” Drive through the town's colonial section, including Washington Square, the Tennis Hall of Fame, Trinity Church, and Redwood Library. Pass by the Gothic-influenced Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church, where Jacqueline Bouvier wed Senator John F. Kennedy in 1953 as well as Brenton Point, the southern tip of the island.
Designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt for Cornelius Vanderbilt II, this Italian Renaissance palace was completed in less that three years and remains one of the grandest of all Newport cottages. The 16th-century palaces of Genoa and Turin inspired The Breakers. Completed in 1895, the mansion is situated on a 13-acre estate overlooking a spectacular view of the rugged Atlantic coastline. Learn how Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) established the family fortune in steamships and later in the New York Central Railroad, which was a pivotal development in the industrial growth of the nation during the late 19th century.
Notes: Due to their popularity, there may be a short wait to enter The Breakers.
