Big Rocks

Mentors

Materials:

Bucket, Rocks, Pebbles, Sand, Water

Time:

15 minutes

Objective:

To spark discussion about time management and scheduling

Instructions:

  • Place the bucket on the floor or a table with the other materials hidden.
  • Place the rocks into the bucket.  Ask the class if the bucket is full and if they think you can fit more into it. They will typically say the bucket is full.
  • Place the pebbles into the bucket.  Ask the class if the bucket is full and if they think you can fit more into it.
  • Pour the sand into the bucket.  Ask the class if the bucket is full and if they think you can fit more into it.
  • Pour the water into the bucket.  Ask the class if the bucket is full.

Debriefing:

What does this show you?  Anticipate that your class will respond with this answer: You can always fit more into your schedule but it’s important to have some room for the unexpected. But you should try to guide the discussion by talking about what each item symbolizes.

What do the rocks symbolize? The big things in daily life such as class, sleeping, eating.

What do the pebbles symbolize? Studying/Homework, Hanging out with friends and family.

When does something transform from sand to a pebble, from a pebble to a rock, etc.?
