Materials:

N/A

Time:

15 minutes

Objective:

To explore diversity by having participants share cultural stories, legends, folk tales, and myths

Instructions:

Divide participants into pairs or small groups. Ask each person to think of a special story, legend, folk tale, or myth from his/her own culture.

Have the participants spend the next few minutes telling each other their stories.

Then have them discuss the stories. Ask them to consider any similarities and differences.

Now go back to one big group and have the participants briefly report on their discussions.

Look for any generalizations that come out of this activity

Debriefing:

Point out that all cultures have a rich heritage of stories, legends, folk tales, and myths. This fact demonstrates another aspect of diversity. Among various cultures, there may be similarities or differences in the stories, but it is important to recognize that they are all equally valid for their particular cultures.

Variations:

Ask participant to discuss objects or symbols that also represent their cultures.
