[ Swimming ] Swimming & Diving Readying for Atlantic 10 Championships : The University of Rhode Island women's swimming & diving team opens competition Wednesday (Feb. 22) at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving Championships.

[ Community ] Student volunteers share experiences while building Habitat homes : At one time, the Roger Williams dining hall was a noisy place, filled with the clattering of plates and the hustle and bustle of students grabbing a bite to eat between classes. Now, the dining hall is still noisy, but not in the same way.

[ Green Industry ] URI Green Industry career event set for Feb. 24 : Imagine yourself preparing and maintaining the turf of Gillette Stadium, Yankee Stadium, or even turf exported and sent to Oman, an Arab state in Southwest Asia. Envision yourself managing and assessing wine at Newport Vineyards as a food scientist. Well, for several University of Rhode Island graduates, these jobs are reality.

University of Rhode Island students Matt Greenhalgh and Grace Rignanese were honored Sunday night as co-recipients of the Ben Mondor Community Service Award at the 66th annual Words Unlimited Awards Banquet. n the past year, Greenhalgh and Rignanese have each helped save the life of a stranger by donating bone marrow through the National Marrow Donor Program.

Spotlight

University of Rhode Island alumnus and Pilgrim High School science teacher Michael Lobdell reminded students that collaboration is the key to success. "It all comes down to collaboration," he said. "People need to collaborate and learn from each other to get better." Lobdell, who graduated from URI in 1996 with a degree in zoology and then a master's in education.

Two Christmases ago, Albert Kausch, a professor of cell and molecular biology at the University of Rhode Island, noticed that the 6-year-old son of a researcher in his department enjoyed drawing. So for a present, he gave Nelson Vasilchik two artist notebooks in which he had written his adaptation of the Grimms' Fairy Tale "Iron Hans," and a version by poet Robert Bly called "Iron John."
