Bio
DR. JAMES LADEWIG, formerly on the faculty of Vassar and Wellesley Colleges, is responsible for expanding the URI music history curriculum from traditional classical repertory to include world music, jazz, and popular music.
In 2005 the James Ladewig Scholarship in Music History was established. The purpose of this Scholarship is to recognize and provide awards to undergraduate students who demonstrate academic excellence in, and enthusiasm for, the study of music history at URI. The Scholarship was generously initiated with a major gift from a former music major. Regarding this Scholarship, Dr. Ronald Lee, Chairperson of the Department, has stated, "All of us can point back to a special teacher who has made a major impact on our lives. This special teacher is one who is dedicated to improving the skills of each student, increasing one's understanding of the discipline being studied, and developing the sense of confidence and maturity necessary for success in life. James Ladewig is this special teacher; he is a model for many of us."
A specialist in the Renaissance and Baroque eras, in particular instrumental and keyboard music of Italy, he has published scholarly articles on the variation canzona, Frescobaldi, Luzzaschi and Bach, which have appeared in the Journal of Musicology, Frescobaldi Studies, and Studi Musicali. He edited the 30-volume series, Italian Instrumental Music of the Sixteenth and Early Seventeenth Centuries: Previously Unpublished Full Scores of Major Works from the Renaissance and Early Baroque (New York & London: Garland Publishing).
Dr. Ladewig has received grants from the American Council of Learned Societies and the URI Foundation. He has been a visiting scholar at Harvard University and is a member of the American Musicological Society, the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music and the Renaissance Society of America. He is presently the treasurer and member of the board of directors of the American Musicological Society. Dr. Ladewig has served as president of the New England Chapter of the American Musicological Society and is formerly the editor of the national newsletter of the American Musicological Society.
