Doctorate in Ethnomusicology, University of California at Los Angeles
Master of Arts in Musicology, Tufts University
Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, University of Rhode Island

Born in Rhode Island, JULIE RAIMONDI received her B.A. in Music and B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Rhode Island and her M.A. in Musicology with a concentration in Ethnomusicology from Tufts University. She then began study at the University of California Los Angeles in the Department of Ethnomusicology, where she completed her doctorate in 2012.

Julie has enjoyed playing in a wide range of musical traditions, including playing string bass in orchestras and jazz bands, and participating in Indonesian, West African, Near Eastern, and American folk ensembles. Though her musical interests and experiences vary greatly, she is often drawn to the vernacular musics of the southern United States. She is also interested in music and religion, musical agency, and music and space.

Her Ph.D. dissertation is entitled, "Space, Place, and Music in New Orleans." She finds New Orleans to be an excellent city to study music and space. Where else in the United States can one encounter such a density of parading traditions and a wealth of historically important musical places that remain operational despite all obstacles?
