BRIAN CARDANY has been the Associate Director of Bands at the University of Rhode Island since 2002. Dr. Cardany also serves as the Assistant Conductor of the American Band of Providence and the Associate Conductor of the URI Symphony Orchestra, and has finished his first summer season as Conductor for the South County Chamber Orchestra.

Dr. Cardany is increasingly in demand as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. He has twice conducted of the Rhode Island Junior All-State Band, and has served as conductor for the Central Division Senior Honors Band and the Southeast District Junior Honors Band in Massachusetts. He has presented clinics at schools in Arizona, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, and throughout Rhode Island, and has repeatedly served as an adjudicator for band festivals in Rhode Island and Maine.

In addition to his activities as a conductor and teacher, Dr. Cardany has maintained his involvement in scholarly activity. His presentations include "Nonverbal Communication: The Most Valuable Tool" at the 2009 MENC Eastern Division Conference, and a co-presentation titled "Exploring the Core Repertoire for High School Band" at the 2009 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. He also served as a Research Associate for Teaching Music through Performance in Band, Volume 8 (GIA Publications).

Before arriving at URI, Dr. Cardany taught instrumental music in public schools in Virginia and Maryland for five years, and served as a four-year graduate teaching assistant in the band program at Arizona State University. He has remained active as a trumpet player throughout his career, including membership in the American Band of Providence since 2002.

Dr. Cardany is the sponsor for the Theta Upsilon chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, coordinator of the Southern New England Honor Band and conductor of the URI Commencement Band. He is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, National Band Association, Conductors Guild, National Association for Music Education (MENC), and the International Trumpet Guild.
