Jane Murray

Biography

Jane Murray has held the solo English horn chair in the RI Philharmonic since 1978.

In her long career she has held principal oboe chairs in the New Bedford Symphony, Festival Ballet, Chorus of Westerly and RI Civic Chorale orchestras and in the pit for many Broadway tours. She performs regularly as a chamber musician with the Hilltop Trio and the Northeast Chamber Ensemble.

In demand as an English horn soloist, she has appeared with the Rhode Island Philharmonic, Ocean State Chamber Orchestra,  “Concerts on the Island” Chamber Orchestras, and the Chamber Orchestra of Barrington and was featured at the Newport Music Festival from 1993-2003. She also appeared at the Kingston Chamber Music Festival in 1989, 1995 and 2008, and at Vermont’s Reveille Festival from 2011-2014.

She is also a Licensed Body Mapping Educator, teaching a somatic awareness curriculum which can help musicians of all ages retrain their movement to allow them to play without pain and avoid injury. She teaches courses at URI and Rhode Island College as well as in private practice, and is in demand as a clinician. She has presented workshops for the New England Band Directors Institute, SUNY Purchase and UMass Oboe Days, Kinhaven Music Camp, Providence College, RI Philharmonic Music School, and at the 2016 International Double Reed Society Conference in Columbus GA.
