News Update
President Robert L. Carothers has responded to the "Amethyst Initiative," a movement organized by presidents of about 100 universities nationwide calling on lawmakers to lower the drinking age from 21 to 18.
Nationally known and recognized for his leadership and commitment to addressing the problems of college student alcohol and drug use, Carothers spoke about this initiative with some regional and national media.
"We know so much more now about adolescent brain development, and we know that alcohol disrupts that development. The earlier a person starts to use alcohol, the greater the odds that the person will develop abuse and addiction behaviors. Twenty-one is a time when the judgment functions in the frontal lobes are near completion, and it's a good marker for the time when young people make better decisions," said Carothers.
