URI Bay Campus to Hold Free JASON Project 2000 Teacher Training Session

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. -- January 5, 2000 -- Teachers can still participate in the full suite of JASON Project 2000 activities before the live broadcasts begin in late February. The URI Office of Marine Programs (OMP) will sponsor a free JASON Project 2000 teacher training workshop on Saturday, January 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Coastal Institute Visitor Center on the URI Narragansett Bay Campus.

The workshop will prepare teachers and group leaders to participate in JASON XI: Going to Extremes. Those who attend the training session will receive a free JASON Project video, a copy of the 2000 JASON curriculum, and special access to an Online Activity and Resource Center.

This year's program will trace the path of ocean and space research and exploration and examine how modern-day explorers use new technologies to study extreme environments. More information about the 2000 JASON Project can be found at www.jasonproject.org.

The 2000 JASON Project live broadcasts will be held from February 28 to March 10, excluding Sunday, and every student in Rhode Island will have the opportunity to view the expedition either live at the URI Bay Campus or over local cable channels.

Live, interactive JASON broadcasts at the Coastal Institute Visitor Center Auditorium will be shown at 9:45 and 11:15 a.m., and 12:45, 2:15, and 3:45 p.m. each

Monday through Friday, February 28-March 3 and March 6-10, and Saturday, March 4. Tickets are just $1 per person. The JASON Project broadcasts are open to schools, groups, and individuals, but pre-registration is required and will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Some live JASON broadcasts will also be shown over local cable television stations.

The Rhode Island JASON Project is coordinated by the URI Office of Marine Programs. Sponsors for the JASON Project in Rhode Island include Taco, Inc., EDS, Bell Atlantic, Cox Communications, the Providence Journal, the State of Rhode Island, and the University of Rhode Island.

For information or to sign up for the training session, register a class or group, or purchase individual tickets, call the URI Office of Marine Programs at 401-874-6211.
