URI to host hold team training workshop June 7

KINGSTON, R.I. -- May 24, 2000 -- The Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center will present a team-training workshop at the University of Rhode Island's Kingston Campus Wednesday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Presenters will be Theresa Drinka, Ph.D., president of River's Edge Consulting and Phillip G. Clark, Sc.D, URI professor and director of the program in gerontology. He is also director of the Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center, which is based at URI.

The workshop will feature presentations, dialogue, and case discussions on teamwork issues, focusing on leadership and ethics. This workshop is ideal for students, health and human service professionals, and others who work or plan to work in collaborative settings. The day's activities will blend teamwork theory and practice to give participants a framework for identifying and solving problems in teams.

Drinka has more than 20 years of experience developing, managing, and evaluating work teams. In 1996, she established River's Edge Consulting to train teams in health care, education, information technology, and other service settings throughout North America. She focuses on assisting teams and organizations that want to create positive change, specializing in assisting teams that are experiencing difficulty.

Clark specializes in interdisciplinary education program development and ethical issues in teamwork in health care settings. He has developed several interdisciplinary, collaborative programs at URI during the past 20 years.

Drinka and Clark are the authors of the forthcoming book, Health Care Teamwork: Interdisciplinary Practice and Teaching, to be published this fall by Auburn House.

The $20 registration includes coffee, refreshments, lunch and materials. Payment may be made by cash or check, made out to the University of Rhode Island. A visitor's parking pass and campus map may be obtained at the Visitor's Center on Upper College Road. Advance registration is required. The workshop will be held in Galanti Lounge, which is located on the third floor of University Library. Call 874-5311 to register.

The RIGEC (Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center) is a consortium of the URI Colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy, and Human Science and Services, Rhode Island College School of Social Work, Brown University School of Medicine, and Aging 2000. The RIGEC web site is found at www.uri.edu/outreach/rigec.
