South Ferry Walking Tours Provide
a Glimpse into South County History
Narragansett, RI -- July 17, 2000 -- Relive the history of a once-thriving
village on Narragansett Bay with family and friends this summer by taking
a South Ferry Walking Tour. The one-hour interpretive walks will take place
on Thursday, July 27, and August 10 at 10:30 a.m.
Led by volunteers Wayne and Bernice Durfee of Narragansett, the program
begins at the Coastal Institute Visitor Center on the URI Narragansett Bay
Campus. The guides then lead participants through the historic sites at
South Ferry, including the old ferry landing, the WW I military bunkers,
South Ferry Church, and the campus of the URI Graduate School of Oceanography.
In addition, visitors can enjoy the Living on the Edge coastal
science exhibit and the Coastal Institute Bookstore, which is open Monday-Friday,
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., during July and August.
Both the South Ferry Walking Tour and the Living on the Edge exhibit
are free and open to the public. For information or directions call the
URI Office of Marine Programs at 874-6211.
