KINGSTON, R.I. -- March 26, 2001 -- The University of Rhode Islands Fashion Merchandising Society will present its annual fashion show Thursday, April 12 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom.
Tickets, which can be purchased at the Memorial Union Box office starting Monday, April 9 and at the door the night of the show, are $3 for URI students and $5 for the general public.
The show entitled, "Ambrosia, Sweet Intoxication," is inspired by the belief from Greek and Roman mythology that ambrosia was the food of the gods and imparted immortality.
The shows set will feature pillars, grapevines, and flowers to create the image of a haven for gods and goddesses, according to Vannou Nhem, president of the Fashion Merchandising Society and URI psychology major.
Nhem is just one of the many designers who will display and model their clothes. She said the students will present 14 clothing lines, for a total of 50 to 60 individual outfits.
While the theme harks back to ancient Greece and Rome, the clothes will reflect todays contemporary style. The students make all their clothing, and many of the designs are the students own. Some students, however, use patterns and ideas they have gotten from stores.
"This is a great night because our talented students can show off their work, and be recognized for their creativity," Nhem said.
"Even though I am not a textiles major, I got involved through my friends a few years ago and I just thought it would be fun and different. Because of what I know about sewing and clothes, I just wanted to contribute. This is one of the most rewarding and fun things in which I have been involved at URI," Nhem said.
