URI sponsors environmental poster contest for K-12 students
Contest held in conjunction with University’s honors colloquium

KINGSTON, R.I. -- September 17, 2001 -- The University of Rhode Island is hosting a poster contest that asks students in grades K-12 to create a poster illustrating how to protect the environment for future generations of children and wildlife. Cosponsored by The Providence Journal, the contest is being held in conjunction with URI’s fall honors colloquium, "A Just and Sustainable Future: Overcoming Barriers to Action," a semester-long series of public programs addressing the fair and sustainable use of natural resources.

The poster contest is designed to encourage students to reflect on their personal role in environmental protection. Students are asked to create a poster with a slogan responding to the question, "What can I do to make sure kids and critters inherit a clean, safe world?" It is not necessary to be a talented artist to enter. All it takes is a thoughtful idea and a unique design.

Deadline for submissions is October 26, 2001.

Winning entrants in each of four age categories will receive U.S. Savings Bonds, and their posters will be placed on public display. All participants will receive certificates of recognition.

For complete contest details and an entry form, contact Todd McLeish in the URI News Bureau at 874-7892 or at
