Digital Convergence is topic of upcoming lecture at URI

KINGSTON, R.I. -- September 18, 2001 -- Andy Covell, director of Information Technology for the School of Management at Syracuse University, will present a lecture entitled: "Digital Convergence and Information Sharing for Creators and Collaborators," at 5 P.M. on Monday, Sept. 24, in the University of Rhode Island Library’s Galanti Lounge. A reception will follow. Free and open to the public, the presentation is sponsored by the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies and the Honors Program and Visiting Scholars Committee.

Covell’s presentation will provide a framework for understanding the evolution and convergence of digital technologies. He will discuss the societal and economic impact of new technology and highlight the opportunities for creators and collaborators who may be the big winners as the technology revolution moves beyond the demise of the dot.coms.

Over the past twenty years, Covell has held other positions at Syracuse University including manager of Faculty Computing Services, manager of the Research Data Center, database administrator and programmer analyst, as well as manager of research and development for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Central New York. He was also the founder, president and CEO of University Technology Associates (UTA), which offered technology consulting services to Central New York businesses and educational institutions during the 1990's.

The author of Digital Convergence: How the Merging of Computers, Communications, and Multimedia is Transforming Our Lives published by Aegis Publishing (1999) of Newport, R.I., Covell maintains the "Digital Convergence" web site at: He has also published numerous articles in such journals as Network Computing, Workgroup Computing Quarterly and Information Week.

He teaches a seminar entitled "Internet Computing and Digital Convergence" for the School of Management in the MBA executive program and is the creator and instructor of "Entrepreneurship and Digital Commerce," an undergraduate course in the school.
