URI Office of Marine Programs Invites High School Students
to Explore Career Opportunities in Oceanography

Narragansett, RI -- October 11, 2001 -- High school students interested in pursuing a career in the ocean sciences are invited to attend a program that will answer many questions about what it takes to be an oceanographer.

So You Want to Be an Oceanographer? will take place on Saturday, October 27, from 2-4 p.m. in the Coastal Institute Building on the URI Bay Campus in Narragansett. A short walking tour of the URI Graduate School of Oceanography will follow the presentation.

The program will consider how and where oceanographers make their living, what high school course should students take to prepare for a college curriculum in ocean sciences, and what kinds of opportunities exist for the different kinds of oceanographers.

The program is designed especially for high school students and their parents who wish to know more about educational and career opportunities in oceanography. Teachers and guidance counselors will also find this program helpful.

The cost is $10 for each student or teacher/guidance counselor. Additional family members are free. The fee includes one set of handouts for each registered participant. Preregistration is required. For information or registration, call the URI Office of Marine Programs at 874-6211.
