URI Providence Campus announces events, workshops series

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sept. 17, 2002 -- The University of Rhode Island’s Providence Campus will hold events and workshops featuring arts therapy, health experts and a historical archaeologist this fall. The series is designed around the lunch and dinner hour.

Co-sponsored by the Office of Student Services and the Student Government Board, the events will be held in Room 242 of the campus, unless otherwise noted. All of the workshops are free and open to the public.

The event series is as follows:

Wednesday, Sept. 25, Noon to 1 p.m. - Marilyn Martin, URI Cooperative Extension educator, will identify areas of stress, teach coping strategies and explore ways to help children cope with divorce in her lecture, "Coping as a Single Parent." Pre-registration is required.

Wednesday, Oct. 2, Noon to 1 p.m., Room 207 - Joyce Dolbec, a consultant, will discuss women’s health issues in "Everything You Need to Know About Breast Health But Were Afraid to Ask."

Wednesday, Oct. 9, 5 to 6:30 p.m. - In "Sparking the Magic Within", Expressive Arts Therapist and Holistic Counselor Carolyn Jayne will discuss the power of individual energy and the means to express it through the use of visualization and color.

Tuesday, Oct. 22, Noon to 1:30 p.m. - Are you tired of dieting, bingeing or worrying about food and your body image? Author Barbara Holtzman will discuss "Making Peace with Food and Your Body" with an intuitive, non-diet approach. Bring a lunch and learn how to get off of the dieting cycle. Pre-registration is required by Oct. 11.

Thursday, Oct. 31, Noon to 1 p.m . - Historical Archaeologist Fred Meli will present, "Monsters and Madmen", an intriguing look at the field of demonology and the related areas of monsters.

Wednesday, Nov. 13, Noon to 1 p.m. - Marge Sohar, a registered physical therapist, will discuss the hazards caused by a poorly designed workstation in "Ergonomics and the Computer Workstation".

Wednesday, Nov. 20, Noon to 1 p.m. - URI Cooperative Extension Educator Phyllis J. Lamidi will discuss how traditions can bond a family, increase loyalty and open up a whole realm of communications.

Wednesday, Dec. 4, Noon to 1:30 p.m. - Therapist and educator Sue Corrigan will introduce a new approach to transforming stress in, "Restructuring Stress".

Pre-registration will be held in the Office of Student Services in Room 125. Disability assistance is available upon 72 hours notice.
