URI Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education
to offer Christopher Reeve scholarship
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- October 1, 2002 -- University of Rhode Island President Robert L. Carothers will announce tonight that a yearly scholarship named after actor and activist Christopher Reeve will be given to a student enrolled at the Universitys Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education at the Providence Campus.
The scholarship is to commemorate Reeves visit to the University to speak on stem cell research. His talk is part of URIs Honors Colloquium series this fall on the ethical, legal, and social impact of genetic technology.
"I welcome this opportunity to honor a man who has faced great adversity and is making great progress to overcome it," said philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein who donated the funds for the scholarship.
"This scholarship will go each year to a student at the URI Feinstein College, many of whom have struggled themselves to overcome adversity and are willing and eager to work hard to better their lives."
The value of the scholarship will range from $500 to $1,500 yearly. Those interested in applying for the scholarship should call 277-5162.
The first Christopher Reeve Scholarship will be awarded for the spring 03 semester. Thereafter, the award will be made once a year in September.
