URI initiates 27 students into engineering honor society

Kingston, R.I. -- January 14, 2003 -- The Rhode Island Beta Chapter of Tau Beta Pi initiated 27 University of Rhode Island students into the national engineering honor society during their meeting in December. Chapter President Marc D. Normadin of Fall River, Mass., conducted the ceremonies.

Tau Beta Pi was founded in 1885 to recognize the distinguished academic achievements of engineering students and to "foster a spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges." The honor society has 195 collegiate chapters with more than 300,000 members. The R.I. Beta Chapter was established at URI in 1954.

To become a member of Tau Beta Pi, juniors must rank in the top 1/8 of their class and seniors must rank in the top 1/5 of their class. Students must also show a spirit of liberal education that manifests itself in the form of community service and concern.
